NASA Flies Drunk

Drive drunk, and you'll lose your license, your job, or maybe even your life. However, it seems there's (quite unbelievably) more tolerance for getting behind the "wheel" of a billion dollar NASA rocket while under the influence. According to ... various reports released last week, astronauts were allowed by NASA to fly despite being considerably intoxicated. Although details are sketchy at best (no one seems to know when the incidents occurred, on what space craft, or who the astronauts were), it's another black eye for American space flight not long after the much-publicized attempted assault ... (view more)

OLPC Offers One (Naughty) Look Per Child

If you gave the kids in your home a computer and turned your back, what kind of sites do you think they'd first visit? Sure, some might take a glance at video games or last night's baseball score, but plenty of teens are simply salivating at the ... chance to look up nudies on the web. Let's not beat around the bush here (pun somewhat intended), young males crave that kind of thing. Maybe that's why no one should be surprised that Nigerian children, benefactors of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program, have been found taking peeks at the web's sultry sites. OLPC, which seeks to provide ... (view more)

Live in West Virginia? I'll Type Slower

No, I don't mean to offend the bright citizens of the great eastern Mountain State. Instead, the title of this article is merely an observation of the horrible Internet speeds affecting the people of that state, and a few others, across the United ... States. In fact, a recent study has found that although America leads the world in many technological spheres, when it comes to Internet speed, it is drastically falling behind. Over 80,000 U.S. Internet users took part in a survey performed by the Communications Workers of America union and Speed Matters website. In the end, the group found that ... (view more)

Dell Addresses '22 Confessions of a Former Dell Sales Manager'

When a former Dell sales manager posted an aggressive and revealing blog post on Consumerist.com, their former employer was, as you might expect, less than enthused. Dell was so unhappy, in fact, that it sent a letter to the website requesting that ... the blog be removed for allegedly containing confidential information. But after Consumerist.com refusal to comply, Dell has changed its tune and apologized for its cease-and-desist request. The original post, entitled "22 Confessions of a Former Dell Sales Manager," offered advice to consumers purchasing a Dell. The blog offered various tips, ... (view more)

NASA Bets Astronaut Lives on Sewing Kit

Since NASA routinely puts astronauts in space, you'd think the trip would be filled with all sorts of experiments dependent upon modern science and technology. Surprisingly enough, however, it's technology failing the visitors to NASA's ... International Space Station, while extremely low-tech techniques are saving the day. Blame Russia The problems all started with an unreliable Russian navigation computer. The device hung up on the astronauts last Tuesday, causing a not-so-funny comedy of errors while engineers worked to open external solar blankets. Despite the hiccup, the solar technology ( ... (view more)

Study Suggests Soda Pop Causes Premature Ageing

For many techies, whiling away the hours on audio/video forums or in online gaming sessions, sugary sodas are the key to staying attentive. Anyone who's stared at a computer screen for more than eight hours a day knows that something extra -- be it ... coffee, tea, or pop -- is often needed to prevent one from passing out on their keyboard. Unfortunately, now it seems techies, and just about everyone else, have been given one more reason to stay away from Coca-cola and the like. Aside from dousing the insides with sugar (causing weight gain, dental issues, and even diabetes), sodas are now being ... (view more)

Scotty's Remains: Rocket Proving Difficult to Recover

A couple weeks ago, we reported on the launching of a couple hundred human remnants into space. Sound whacky? It is, but the stunt -- which included the ashes of a former astronaut and Star Trek actor James Doohan -- attracted quite a bit of ... attention. Now, teams associated with the project are scrambling to relocate the cremated ashes as they return to earth: a task that's proving unexpectedly tricky. For those who missed it, the actor who once portrayed the lovable "Scotty" on Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek series (Doohan) was amongst 200 long-gone souls launched towards the heavens ... (view more)

Rocket Launches Star Trek's 'Scotty' and 200 Others Into Space

Unlike most of those who have passed on, Star Trek actor James Doohan, best known as "Scotty", wasn't laid to rest six feet under the earth. Instead, the famous Canadian-born actor was officially "beamed up" yesterday, even though he died a couple ... years ago at the ripe age of 85. The unorthodox ceremony lifted the ashes of some 200 people into the edge of space over New Mexico's desert base, "Truth or Consequences." Hundreds of onlookers applauded as the slim, twenty-foot rocket spiraled up towards the heavens. As mentioned, Doohan is most remembered for his supporting role on Gene ... (view more)

Do Geeks Make for Best Romantics?

According to popular tech publication Wired, there are at least ten good reasons why geeks, nerds, or even dorks, make for the best lovers. Some of the site's reasoning makes sense, while others appear a desperate attempt to diversify who's clicking ... on whose lavalife profile. So, what makes sense? Reason #10: Geeks build it, so you will come. According to popular belief, women love a handyman. Although this is generally associated with fixing toilets, kitchen faucets, and leaky roofs, in this day and age it should also apply to technology. In many instances, computer mechanics charge as much ... (view more)

Geek Squad Member Busted Peeping on Customer

Best Buy has for a long time offered "Thousands of Possibilities". Apparently, one of those includes the chance to be recorded in the shower by one of the company's Geek Squad employees. That's exactly what happened according to a lawsuit filed ... early this month, alleging that a technician set up his camera phone in the washroom of a customer. According to reports, on March 4th, Hao Kuo Chi entered the home of roommates Natalie Fornaciari and Sarah Vasquez. While the two women expected Chi to simply perform his Geek functions, he set about his own plan to record Vasquez in the shower. While ... (view more)
