Internet Explorer 6
Spyware -- Alexa Registry Key

" First off - thanks for
the newsletter
- great stuff!
I recently updated Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1 from
Microsoft's CD. I expect the following will happen whether you are
installing Internet Explorer version 6 from scratch, upgrading, or updating,
whether from an installation CD or a download.
Your readers may be interested to know that during installation "Big
Brother" Microsoft inserts a piece of Alexa
Spyware into
the system
registry. The following is the offending key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\internet
explorer\extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a}
With all the usual cautions about playing in the Registry - blah-blah -
this key can be safely removed. The joke is that the IE6 update is
supposedly intended in large part to take care of some security flaws!
Go figure! "
My Response:
Thanks for the tip!
Don't forget to grab
Lavasoft's Ad-Aware which will sniff out Spyware and Adware on your
machine -- best of all, it's free.
