If so, you'll find this software review highly informative.

--

I get asked all the time, "Dennis, what can I do to make my PC faster?"

The simple answer to this question is that there isn't a simple answer to this question. That's because a question like this depends on a number of factors, and can be solved using either a hardware or a software solution (or a combination of both). First, let's talk about hardware since it has a major impact on how software operates -- especially Microsoft Windows.

Double, or Triple Your PC Speed: Using Hardware

Ask any PC professional -- if you're looking to make a major impact on the speed of your PC, you'll likely want to do a hardware upgrade. Two of the most profound ways to increase your PC speed would be to upgrade your processor (CPU) to something at least twice as fast as what you have now, and max out your RAM (computer memory).

For example: if your PC has a 1.8GHz CPU, you would see vast improvements if you upgraded to a dual-core or a quad-core 3.4GHz processor. If your PC has 2GB of RAM, 4GB would make a massive difference.

The caveat here is that computing technology changes drastically every two years. This is a well-documented fact (referred to as "Moore's Law"). Thus, older hardware is often incompatible with new hardware -- this is especially true with CPU and RAM. So, unless you've purchased a new computer in the last 2 years, adding a new CPU and doubling your RAM won't be a viable option.

Speed Up Your PC: Remove Bloatware

There are a number of ways you can speed up your PC using software. One way to achieve this would be to rid your system of bloatware -- software that is so bloated with useless features, it requires an obscene amount of memory (and processing) to operate.

An example of removing bloatware would be to replace MS Office with Ashampoo Office. Ashampoo Office is 1/20th the size of MS Office and provides the same functionality of MS Office. Because Ashampoo Office has a very small memory (RAM) footprint, it requires less processing and operates much faster than MS Office.

Caveat: while MS Office is a good example of bloatware, swapping out software for a streamlined alternative isn't always easy, as software alternatives can be limited.

Key Computing Concept -- Important To Understand: RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is used as a cache to the processor (CPU). If your system has limited RAM, your hard drive (the "C drive") is used as an alternative to RAM. For example: if you load Microsoft Word but your PC doesn't have enough RAM available, your PC will dump what is currently in RAM onto your hard drive, thereby freeing up available RAM to make place for MS Word. Dumping RAM onto a hard drive is referred to as a page file, or virtual memory. Since hard drives are a thousand times slower than RAM, it's the data which is swapped back-and-forth from RAM to hard drive (and vice versa) that causes the majority of slow downs on a PC when you're moving from task to task, or program to program. (Source: mathworks.com) In short, the more RAM you have, the better.

Speed Up Your PC: Using Optimization Utilities

With hardware and software alternatives off the list, one other way to speed up your computer is to use a specialized suite of software programs that digitally scrub the PC from the inside out.

This could be achieved using a hard drive defragmenter, junk file remover, Windows settings tweaker, Windows registry cleaner, or similar.

At Infopackets, we've reviewed a number of Windows optimization programs, many of which are similar in nature. Today, I'm reviewing a new kind of system utility called SpeedUpMyPC, which offers a hybrid approach to PC optimization.

SpeedUpMyPC 2012: A New Kind of Optimization Utility

As I discussed previously, the availability of RAM (a system resource) is key to how your computer operates. In short: the more RAM you have available, the better.

SpeedUpMyPC is a utility that actively monitors your PC, optimizing processes and programs that continually run your computer.

SpeedUpMyPC regulates RAM and CPU usage, shuts off unnecessary background processes, and synchronizes tasks for quicker execution.

What makes SpeedUpMyPC unique from most mainstream system optimizers is that it does the monitoring / processing and optimizing in real-time -- the majority of optimization programs we've reviewed are not proactive in this nature.

SpeedUpMyPC 2012: How It Works

SpeedUpMyPC is simple to use, even for beginners.

After scanning your system to identify bottlenecks and slowdowns, SpeedUpMyPC offers a multitude of targeted tweaks that boost system resource management.

Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: Launch the program, and scan your computer. The scan will identify and list improvements targeted specifically for your PC.

  • Step 2: After the scan, click the Fix Issues button and improvements will implemented. Note: this is available in the full version only. Registration is required.

  • Step 3: Switch on Speed Tools for an extra speed boost (explained further down).

  • Step 4: Leave SpeedUpMyPC run in the background and let it do its job.

SpeedUpMyPC 2012: Benefits

SpeedUpMyPC offers optimizations that are chosen specifically for your PC, and provides the following benefits: a faster computer start up, it reduces system slowdown, it provides more responsive Windows interface, it recovers hard drive space, it optimizes browser speed, and makes Windows search faster.

SpeedUpMyPC Speed Tools: Explained

Speed Tools are unique to SpeedUpMyPC and remain active as long as SpeedUpMyPC is left running in your taskbar. Each speed tool has a specific purpose, explained below.

The CPU Manager

A Windows program (or process) may cause problems by manipulating an unreasonably large chunk of system resources (RAM). The CPU manager guards against the possibility of such an event by adjusting the priority of a process before it spirals out of control.

Proactive Thumbnail Generator

Every time you open a picture folder under MS Windows, a picture thumbnail is used for preview.

With the Proactive thumbnail generator on, your PC will conduct a one-time thumbnail generation process and save the relevant data to a Windows system folder.

From then onwards thumbnails will be quickly retrieved instead of generated. This makes a remarkable difference in how fast a folder appears on the screen.

Start Menu Accelerator

The Start menu software accelerator increases launch speed of programs launched from the Start menu by anticipating and pre-loading data into the memory.

Software Launch Booster

When an application is launched, the Launch booster directs extra system resources to reduce launch time.

Question: " The SpeedUpMyPC download is limited and requires me to register to unlock all the features. How do I know it's going to work after I register? Is there a guarantee? "

Answer: Most users should see an improvement. It depends on a number of factors, which is based on the performance scan and resolutions to the issues. That said, Uniblue (the company that makes SpeedUpMyPC) guarantees SpeedUpMyPC with an iron-clad 30-day refund guarantee. From their website:

SpeedUpMyPC makes your computer faster by optimizing system settings and improving resource management. If, for any reason, you are not pleased with our product, contact our customer support team within 30 days of purchase and we will refund the full purchase price.

SpeedUpMyPC: System Tweaks: Explained

System tweaks are one-time changes that take place upon clicking the Speed Up Now button. Although there are many different types of system tweaks, they are grouped under three main categories:

  • System resource tweaks: free up system resources by cutting off unused services or improving system resource allocation.

  • Internet or network tweaks: optimize network and browser settings for better speed and efficiency.

  • Visual effects tweaks: optimize Windows visual effects for speed.

SpeedUpMyPC: Compatibility

SpeedUpMyPC includes both 32-bit and 64-bit editions and is compatible with MS Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Conclusion

SpeedUpMyPC combines a wide range of tools to boost your computer's performance, while providing a commanding lift in responsiveness. It works by optimizing system settings and proactively monitors and improves resource management. SpeedUpMyPC is easy to use and can be implemented in just a few easy clicks.
