iPad 2 Released, but iPad 3 Possible by Year End

Apple's iPad 2 tablet PC launched exactly 1 week ago (March 2, 2011). And while Apple is hoping that thousands of consumers will rush out and purchase the new iPad 2, some analysts suggest that holding off until the iPad 3 becomes available might actually be a better idea.

iPad 2: New Dual Core Processor, Thinner

The iPad 2 offers a number of new features, including an internal dual core Apple A5 processor and a camera designed for FaceTime video messaging. This enables the iPad 2 to message with the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

The iPad2 boasts a 33 per cent thinner exterior and is said to be 15 per cent lighter than the original iPad.

iPad 3 Coming this Holiday Season?

Still, some critics remain steadfast in their belief that the new tablet is nothing to get too excited about. Their outlook is based on the recent rumors that suggest the iPad 3 is already in development and might very well be packaged for release this coming holiday season. (Source: canoe.ca)

The obvious question is why would Apple jeopardize their favorable reputation by undercutting their latest iPad offering?

The answer, say critics, is that there are still some outstanding concerns the iPad 2 has failed to address. This includes issues with the screen display and other visual components. The iPad 2 could very well be an attempt to keep the iPad name current while the iPad 3 goes into development.

Fresh Image a Necessity in Competitive Market

There is certainly motivation for Apple to want to keep their product image fresh in the minds of the public.

Google's Android tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom are receiving some positive reviews as of late, while the increasing popularity of HTC hardware has made for yet another strong competitor. (Source: torontosun.com)

If Apple does roll out two iPad models in one year, it would likely cause chaos for those in the marketing department as it would be incredibly difficult to convince current iPad 2 owners that they are not dejected.

That said: if there is indeed an iPad 3 on the horizon, don't expect Apple to address any rumors until the fanfare surrounding the iPad 2 has quieted down for some time to come.
