Last week, Dee N. had a question concerning the Internet Explorer download-dialogue box:
" On the download Window, there is an option for 'Always ask before opening this type of file'. Well, I accidentally Unchecked this option -- and now, all my .ZIP files open automatically after each download completes! How can I turn this option back on? "
My Response:
I didn't know the answer to this question, so I asked Gazette Readers for help.
Mike K. [and about 40 other readers] informed me that the 'Always ask before opening ... ' option for .ZIP files can be resolved through modifying the entry in the File Types association Window:
- Go to an Explorer window (IE: double left-click My Computer)
- Select Tools -> Folder Options, or View -> Folder Options [Win98]
- Select File Types
- Scroll down and select (left-click once) the offending entry
- Click Advanced
- Ensure that 'Confirm Open after Download' is selected
- Click OK
Side Note: This method can be applied for any file type (not just .ZIPs).
Dan M. and a few others also sent me a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #177976 (Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File), which reiterate the steps outlined above:
