Sort Favorites in Internet Explorer

A few days ago, Ramnik S. asked how to alphabetically sort favorites (web page bookmarks) using Internet Explorer:

" Hi Dennis!

I thoroughly enjoy your newsletter. I find it informative and, even more importantly, fun to read! I have one question regarding the Favorites in Internet Explorer. Over time, as I keep on adding new favorites, the list of favorites no longer remains in alphabetical order. Under 'Organize Favorites', other than manually moving each address, there does not seem to be a way of automatically getting the list in alphabetical order. Is there a simple way to do this? "

My Response:

Yes, and it's much easier to use than the cumbersome "Organize Favorites" option!

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Load Internet Explorer

  2. Click the Favorites Menu

  3. Right-click any item in the list to bring up a new Dialogue Menu

  4. Select the menu option 'Sort by Name'

While skimming through some queries on Google, I also found a very interesting Microsoft Knowledge Base Article # 259735: Favorites May Not Sort in Alphabetical Order.

In a nutshell: Knowledge Base Article # 259735 states that Internet Explorer may not sort objects alphabetically if there are more than 193 items in the list. The Resolution to this problem is to "move the favorites into subfolders, or delete any unused favorites until you have less than 193."

Why 193 items?

It's most likely a software bug. But you have to admit, 193 sure is a strange number!
