Transfer Old Hard Drive to New, Larger Hard Drive (HD)

Infopackets Reader Richard C. writes: " Dear Dennis, You mentioned that Acronis True Image could be used to restore a backup (image) from an old harddrive to a new, larger harddrive. Question: does that create a problem with the hard drive partition ... structure from the old, smaller drive? If so, how does one take advantage of all the extra space on the new drive? " Reminder: we have a 50% sale on Disk Director Suite available through Infopackets.com which expires on August 31st, 2009. Also offered is Acronis True Image at 15% off , expires September 2nd, 2009. Click the respective link for ... (view more)

Move Windows onto Another PC using Backup?

Infopackets Reader 'Larenal' writes: " Dear Dennis, I want to be able to backup my entire laptop's hard drive (including the Windows Registry ) and in case I have to change my laptop, I'd like to be able to restore the image in the new computer. Is ... this possible with Acronis True Image? Thank you. " My response: This is a great question. There is a workaround -- but unfortunately the scenario you've asked isn't possible. Here's why: You want to transfer MS Windows onto another PC. This isn't allowed by Microsoft because they want you to obtain a separate license for every PC you own. I've ... (view more)

Acronis True Image 10: Review

Have you ever played the game, "What If?" For example: 1. What if your PC crashed and you lost all your data? 2. What if you unsuspectingly downloaded a Spyware-infected program and it proved near impossible to remove -- all the while slamming your ... PC full of pesky popup ads and slowing your computer down to a crawl? 3. What if Windows suddenly stopped working properly and refused to boot? 4. Make Your Own Custom System Rescue CD / DVD

Infopackets Reader Don B. writes: " Dear Infopackets Team, I have never made a disk image before. My question is: if I make a complete image backup of my C drive (25Gigabytes large), can I then erase my drive and proceed to restore my image backup? ... Or is disk imaging good only for restoring broken files, but not for doing a complete system restore on a clean drive? I guess I'm a bit confused. What I would like to do is wipe out my hard drive completely, then install Windows XP fresh and all the updates and security software, plus a few program essentials (like MS Office). After doing all of ... (view more)

Use External hard drive to boot Windows incase C drive crashes?

Infopackets Reader Steve T. writes: " Dear Dennis, I have recently added a 120GB external hard drive to my Dell Dimension computer (via the USB port). Problem: whenever I turn my computer on (to start Windows), the external hard drive always tries ... to boot first. Inevitably I get an error message that 'operating system is not found' and I have to shut off the external unit and then reboot the machine in order to start Windows properly. For this reason, I am curious if my Windows XP crashes, would it be able to boot from the external hard drive? If so, how would I go about doing this? ... (view more)
