Email Saver Xe Review, Part 2

There are a few issues regarding last week's article on Email Saver Xe, so I'll just get straight to it. RE: Incorrect Coupon Code I normally proof-read articles a number of times before sending out the newsletter to Readers. And so after making a ... number of routine corrections to last Thursday's feature article, I initiated the command to clean the subscriber base and begin sending out the newsletter. A few hours later, my mailbox began filling up with letters from Infopackets Readers wondering why the coupon code for Email Saver Xe would not work. As it turns out, the correct coupon code is ... (view more)

DVD X Copy Q and A

Quite a few users contacted me over the weekend after reading last Saturday's article regarding 321 Studios and DVD X Copy. I have decided to follow up this discussion with some Q & A. Side note: To recap -- on February 20th, "a federal court ... ruled that 321 Studios must stop making software that allows users to copy DVDs ... [The] St. Louis-based [company] said it would appeal the ruling ... which has barred 321 from selling its DVD copying software [by February 27th, 2004]. " (Source: Reuters.com ). Infopackets Reader Rafael C. asks: " Regarding your February 21st news ... (view more)

The Dangers of File-Sharing Software, Part 2

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article based on the dangers associated with file sharing software (such as Kazaa). In a nutshell, the article explains how file sharing programs compromise computer security and open a gateway to viruses, Remote Access ... Trojans (RATs), and hacker s. At the end of the article, I provided a link to PestScan, which is free program people can use to scan their computers for malicious software -- all through a web browser interface and without having to download or install anything. I suppose it must have completely slipped my mind when I wrote the article, but, I forgot ... (view more)

A Backup Horror Story Computers Revolt

Yesterday's feature article on Eazy Backup stirred up some emotions from a few Infopackets Readers. In fact, Tina P. from Franklin, Indiana told me about her recent horror story: " Dear Dennis, I am grinning now, although I wasn't on Monday! I just ... finished reading yesterday's feature article on Eazy Backup , and must admit: doing regular backups is very important. I don't know if it was a combination of the full moon last Friday and Monday's date being the 13th -- but it seems that all of my electronic equipment have formed a revolt. On Thursday, my desktop's motherboard finally gave ... (view more)

Infopackets Email Newsletter Format

It's been two weeks since the newsletter format has been changed to include "teaser" feature articles and a link to the rest of the story online. Over the weekend, I received a few disheartening emails with regard to the format change. Gan Soon B. ... in South East Asia writes: " Dear Dennis, I am writing to you to register my concern with the new format of your newsletter. Recently, I noticed that you have switched to a format which require users to go online to view the full contents of the newsletter. I figured that you have a valid concern for using that format, and so I didn't ... (view more)

Spy Sweeper Review, Part 3

Yesterday's article about Spy Sweeper sparked interest from Readers. I received a few interesting comments and questions which I would like to address. Infopackets Reader David G. asks: " [Was Webroot's] Spy Sweeper made with stolen [database] code ... from either AdAware or Spybot S&D? I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading something [about] this." My response: The short answer is simply, "No." The software in question is in reference to an article published in the Gazette earlier this year ("Controversy over Lavasoft Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D", ... (view more)

Remove lop (lop.com, C2 Media) from Internet Explorer, Part 2

Yesterday's article, which details how to "Remove lop (lop.com, C2 Media) from Internet Explorer", prompted quite a few responses from readers. Remove lop (lop.com, C2 Media) from Internet Explorer Robert S. writes: " I Just received the latest ... Infopackets and was reading about the lop.com and C2 media. You mentioned SpyBot Search and Destroy (SBSD) ... [from my own experience,] the latest version (1.2) has a problem with [Lop] ... SBSD has issued a fix, but it still does not work on my Windows 2000 Operation System. " I also received the below email from Michael A. Woods ... (view more)
