Mozilla Removes Security Extensions by Avast!, AVG

Mozilla has removed security tools from Avast and AVG from the Firefox extension store. It says the tools are collecting too much personal data about users. The extensions are third-party tools for the Firefox browser that add extra functionality to ... web browsing. In this case, the advertised purposes include highlighting and blocking malware that could be downloaded, and warning users when a page may be part of a phishing attack. That's where a user is tricked into typing in personal details into what they think is a legitimate site. Mozilla acted after online posts by Wladimir Palant, who ... (view more)

Win10 Update Blocked by Qualcomm Wifi, Antivirus

Microsoft has blocked users of some security software from updating Windows 10. It's also spotted some problems with specific WiFi drivers. The good news is that although the Windows 10 problems are with the well-known Avast and AVG security tools, ... it only affects older versions. Specifically the problem comes if the software is from version 19.5.4444.567 or earlier. (Source: techradar.com ) Since Avast! also owns AVG, the version number is the same for both engines. Automatic Updates On Hold Microsoft hasn't said exactly what the compatibility problems are, but has put a block on automatic ... (view more)

How to Fix: Cannot Uninstall AVG Secure Browser (Won't Remove)

Infopackets Reader Frank G. writes: " Dear Dennis, I recently installed AVG antivirus and made the mistake of paying for the upgrade to premium, which has slowed my computer down considerably. I've since canceled my subscription and reverted back to ... AVG free (per your recommendation). I now cannot uninstall AVG Secure browser . Each time I try, it says it's removed, but it's still there. I've tried everything I can think of to remove AVG Secure Browser, but it seems I'm stuck with this steaming pile of poo. To make things worse, it automatically loads every time I reboot the machine like it's ... (view more)

How to Fix: Can't Uninstall AVG Web TuneUp (Won't Remove)

Infopackets Reader Steve S. writes: " Dear Dennis, I have a program called 'AVG Web TuneUp' which refuses to uninstall from my system. I have gone to the Control Panel -> Programs and Features and right clicked it, and selected 'Uninstall' ... multiple times. It goes through the process each time and tells me to reboot - however, after the reboot the program is still there. Is there a way I can remove AVG Web TuneUp from my machine manually? " My response: I asked Steve if he would like me to connect to his machine via my remote desktop support service to have a closer look, and he agreed. ... (view more)

9 Million At Risk from Browser Security Tool

A popular antivirus browser extension has been labeled as a security risk by Google. The tool in question is called Web TuneUp and is a browser extension by AVG; in this case, the problem involves Web TuneUp and the Chrome Browser, but the threat ... itself likely includes other browsers as well. Web TuneUp works by validating links that appear on a web browser page, such as on a search engine results list. It then warns the user if a link points to a page that could compromise security. It's arguably overkill, given that Chrome includes similar tools - plus the fact that Google itself ... (view more)

'AVG LinkScanner 2011 10.0.1204a3402', and 'Disable UAC'

AVG LinkScanner 2011 10.0.1204a3402 The handy new AVG LinkScanner scans pages behind their links before you click on them. It does the same thing every time you enter a web address into your browser. If the page is infected, it simply prevents you ... from opening it. http://linkscanner.avg.com Disable UAC This free tool can help you easily disable the User Account Control (UAC) in Windows (I.E.: when you click on a program in Windows Vista or Windows 7, a window pops up asking if you're sure you want to run the program). Some people find the UAC bothersome, which is why this app was developed. ... (view more)

US Among 10 Riskiest Places for Internet Use: Report

The Republic of Sierra Leone in West Africa isn't exactly a top tourist destination spot. Nonetheless, even if visiting the place might be dangerous, Sierra Leone has been rated the safest place in the world to use the Internet. The figures come ... from security firm Antivirus Grisoft (AVG), which analyzed data from 127 million customers in 144 countries. The statistics are based around the number of times the AVG software detected a security threat, compared with the number of times users went online. Researchers Expose Botnet Packing 60GB of Stolen Data

A recently discovered botnet packing approximately 60 gigabytes (GB) of passwords and other stolen data has been opened up by security researchers. The crack was made in spite of the botnet's difficult-to-detect, self-cloaking ability. Known as ... Mumba, the botnet intercepted and amassed data from 55,000 PCs when it was first investigated, says security firm AVG. It's believed well-known data thieves "Avalanche Group" were responsible for the botnet. According to a report earlier in 2010, Avalanche was responsible for about two in every three phishing attacks during the last six ... (view more)

Another Method for Blocking Pop Up Ads?

Infopackets Reader Darren B. writes: " Dear Dennis, I was just reading your latest newsletter regarding computer internet security. I would be interested to know what you think of using the Windows hosts file as an ad-tracking blocking method. A ... pre-compiled hosts file of this type can be found at smartin-designs.com . To me, this is a much better method of blocking tracking than having ad blocking software using additional resources. You may also wish to make your readers aware of myiebrowser . It uses the IE engine, so it is a small download, and includes tabbed browsing, a pop-up ... (view more)
