Google Slashes Price of its Chromebook Laptop

Google is cutting the price of its very own Chromebook laptop to $299. The new $299 puts it in the same price range as netbooks, the lowest cost version of computers with a physical keyboard, designed mainly for online activity. The Chromebook runs ... the Chrome operating system (OS), which is effectively an upgraded version of the better-known Chrome web browser. The device links directly to tools such as Gmail, the Google Docs office suite, and online image editing, requiring an Internet connection. Originally, all files were stored online, though an update earlier this year added support for ... (view more)

Online Holiday Shopping? Read Dennis' Top 10 Recommendations

With over 30 years in computing experience, I'm often asked my opinion about computer hardware. Questions like, "What can I do to speed up my computer?", or "What type of laptop should I buy?" and things of that nature. Like anyone else, I love a ... good deal. In order to find the best deal possible, sometimes I spend an entire day shopping online to compare prices and features of similar components. Unfortunately, many of the "recommendations" I've read recently appear to be forged for the sake of making a sale, which means there's an awful lot of time wasted wading through ... (view more)

Apple Declares iPhone 4 Signals 'Totally Wrong'

While the Applie iPhone 4 has sold tremendously well, its launch has been mired by complaints of poor signal reception. It's been widely assumed this was due to the fact the new model is designed so that the antenna actually forms the perimeter of ... the handset itself. It appears that the hand, particularly if touching the bottom of the left hand edge of the phone, reduces the signal. One theory is that it isn't the physical blocking which is the issue, but rather than some of the energy in the signal is absorbed by the hand in the form of heat. Production Issues Bottleneck iPad, Report Suggests

Sales of Apple's new iPad tablet device have been impressive so far. So impressive, in fact, that Apple was forced to delay shipping the device outside of the U.S. because it simply couldn't keep up with demand. Well, now there's word that the ... problem is the touch screen display, which suppliers say is a complex and difficult to manufacture tool. The iPad's touch screen, produced by LG Display Co., Samsung Electronics Co., and Seiko Epson Corp., is a lot like the display of the iPhone. At 9.7 inches it's a lot bigger, making the production process infinitely more complex and difficult. "We ... (view more)

Display Number Values Greater Than 12 Digits: MS Excel

By default, MS Excel will display large numbers in cells using the scientific notation format. For example, if you were to place the number "1231231231234" into a cell, the resulting display would be "1.23123E+12" as soon as the Enter key was ... pressed. Even if you increased the cell width to accommodate 12 characters, Excel will still display the number in scientific notation. Thankfully, there's a way to display numbers in a format other than scientific notation! The trick is to reformat the cell properties.
