Windows Live: Is it Worth It?, Part 2

My recent article about Windows Live OneCare drew a response from Infopackets Reader James R. In an excerpt of his email, James writes: " Jim does not mention that Windows Live One Care also includes a two way firewall. This is a major feature in ... any security suite and it's presence should not have been omitted. Jim goes on to say that his computer purrs just by using a cleanup script, Ashampoo's Magic Defrag , Acronis True Image and a few other programs. He goes on to state that everything Live One Care does can be done 'totally free'. Implying that Magic Defrag and True Image are free is ... (view more)

Top 10 Must-Have PC Maintenance Utilities

Die-hard Infopackets Reader Paul B. writes: " Dear Dennis, I have been a faithful subscriber to your newsletter for a few years now. While I immensely enjoy reading your articles (especially the software reviews), I am constantly second-guessing ... myself as to which utilities *I* need to keep my system running smoothly. As a newbie, I would like to know how many of these 'fix all programs' are really necessary? The consensus of the article was that Diskeeper does not provide much of an advantage over Windows ... (view more)

Magic Defrag: Vs Diskeeper, et al?

If I told you that I sat behind a computer and that my job was to pump out 15 articles per week to a quarter million users -- all the while receiving a relentless onslaught of joyful comments and questions from my subscribers, would you believe me? ... A wishful thought. Infopackets Reader 'Heriberto' remarks: " Hi, Dennis, no offense intended, but... are you receiving money to sponsor Ashampoo and all these second class utilities that you suggest [in] your newsletters? The reason I ask is that almost 90% of the software that you recommend [in] your newsletter are second hand software. Maybe ... (view more)

Magic Defrag Review

Infopackets Reader Jim M. writes: " Dear Dennis, I always have problems running Microsoft Windows defrag because it continually restarts and takes forever to finish. A lot of the time I have to restart my computer in Safe Mode and run defrag just to ... get it to finish properly -- and most of the time it takes 2 to 4 hours to complete and I cannot use my computer! I am writing you today because I just finished reading your latest article on PowerUp XP Platinum 2 , and noticed that you briefly mentioned a program called Magic Defrag. Can you please tell me how this works? I've never heard of ... (view more)
