Microsoft's Vista 'PatchGuard' Hacked by a Security Company?

It appears that some of Microsoft's ambitiousness in developing its latest operating system, Windows Vista, is receiving anything but glowing reviews from other segments of the electronics industry. Recently, a few notable vendors are expressing ... anger over Microsoft's internal virus protection within Vista, which they claim has not been developed in coordination with other security companies and is thus, susceptible to hackers. The main problem stems from Microsoft's refusal to allow firms like Authentium, McAfee, and Symantec from full access to the "kernel" technology within the 64-bit ... (view more)

McAfee and Symantec: Vista May Be Less Safe Than XP

Both McAfee and Symantec have recently countered claims that Microsoft has provided security firms with enough information to get their products working its upcoming operating system, Windows Vista. McAfee's Worldwide Corporate Communications Vice ... President Siobhan MacDermott released a statement explaining that the information is inadequate. MacDermott says that although McAfee has received a document that contained the SDK (Software Development Kit) for Windows Security Centre, requests for both clarifications and meetings have been ignored. "To date, we have not had any cooperation from MS ... (view more)

Now that Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is now officially out, and Microsoft is trying to position it as a viable replacement for Mozilla Firefox -- but there are already some security issues with the new browser. One way Microsoft may be trying to ... "bigfoot" Firefox is by making IE7 an automatic update. Apple CEO Dismisses Microsoft's Zune

With Microsoft's entry into the digital music industry scheduled to launch before the holidays, many are wondering how Apple's iPod will fare against the new threat. In a recent interview with Newsweek, Apple CEO Steve Jobs left nothing unclear when ... expressing his lack of concern. Mircosoft's Zune, he says, does not measure up to his company's widely popular iPod. When asked point blank if he was worried about Zune, Jobs simply replied "In a word, no." Congratulations, Microsoft. The Redmond-based company has finally released their much-anticipated new browser, Internet Explorer 7, for Windows XP. And certainly, it's reason for Big M to to be ecstatic -- except for the fact that the new Internet ... software has already failed its first security test. Internet Explorer 7 rolled out Wednesday, October 18. Beta tests of the browser were generally good, with testers and even the competition, Mozilla, admitting that Microsoft had truly developed a wonderful new way to surf the web. Signs Show Vista is Ready

It's been a long time coming. With the release of Windows Vista finally nearing at the end of January, 2007, Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the worldwide launch goes as smoothly as possible. The company recently engaged in its ... typical, weekly international eco-political crusade, this time with the European Commission and Korea in order to affirm a timely release of the much-anticipated operating system. Microsoft has dual plans for Vista's release. Although the dates have changed a few times, the recent launch days have been written in cement by the company. Microsoft ... (view more)

Windows vs Linux: Free or Freedom?

Linux and "Open Source" software are "free." This means their license is a "free license," and the most common is the GPL (General Public License, otherwise known as the CopyLeft License). This license states that anyone is allowed to copy the ... software, review the source code, modify it, and redistribute it as long as it remains licensed with the GPL. Also, being free doesn't just mean free of charge, but also free as in Free Range (chickens?) and Land Of The Free! ;-) So why would you care about freedom when it comes to your operating system? Imagine that Microsoft disappears tomorrow (not ... (view more)

Windows vs Linux: Ownership

Did you pay for Windows? Are you absolutely sure? If your computer came with a copy of MS Windows, then you most likely paid for it (even if the store didn't tell you). In fact, the price for a Windows license these days amounts to an average of one ... fourth of each new computer's price. So unless you obtained Windows illegally, it's a safe bet you probably paid for it. ;-) And unfortunately, a license of Windows doesn't imply that you own the software; it's like the road system and your driver's license: you bought and paid for your license, but you don't own the highway. In a nutshell, you ... (view more)

The Gloves Come Off: MS Visual Studio Challenges Adobe Dreamweaver

Microsoft has taken a swing at Adobe by releasing a promotional video that compares Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 to Adobe Dreamweaver 8. The bold move is part of Microsoft's attempt to increase Visual Studio sales in the midst of a ... Dreamweaver-dominated market. The comparison between the two software applications is somewhat incongruent, however, since Visual Studio is an all-purpose integrated development application while Dreamweaver is primarily a design tool. (Source: microsoft-watch.com ) The comparison video, titled "101 Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Features Compared to Adobe ... (view more)
