Please take care that you do not inadvertently set a tab stop when you double-click on the ruler, but if you do so, you can delete the newly created tab stop at the Tabs dialog box or simply drag it off the ruler. Aligning at a Decimal: MS PowerPoint

Many presentations involve slides containing numbers. They could be financial figures, measurements or other key indicators. If these figures include decimals, they should be aligned at the decimal point. In this manner, your audience can easily ... compare numbers by looking at the figures to the left and right of the decimal point. Having said that: the default alignment when you use the Tab key is left alignment of the starting number. Some people try to use leading spaces to attempt to create decimal alignment, but it never works properly and looks strange to your audience when the numbers ... (view more)

Use Tabs Command: MS Word

When you press the Tab key, the insertion point moves to the right 0.5 inch which means that your typing moves 0.5 inch to the right. This is MS Word's default tab. You use this tab to indent the first line of a paragraph, or even to separate short ... items, such as the chapter name and page title on a table of contents. You can also use tabs to place columns of short items side by side, such as those in a schedule of events, but for that use you may want to set a custom tab. Tabs come in four varieties: left, center, decimal, and right. You use the ruler or the Tabs dialog box to set the tabs. ... (view more)

Set Margins: MS Word

The blank area around the edges of a page is the margin, and you can control how much or how little space you leave there. Of course, you can't run the text all the way from edge to edge on the page, although it would certainly save paper. Imagine ... reading a novel with no margin: even if it cost less, it wouldn't be worth the eye strain. Setting generous margins is a great way to make a document easy on the eyes when reading. Typical business letters allow for at least an inch on all sides, and newsletters require as little as 0.25 inch because they divide the page into smaller elements. In ... (view more)

Consistent Tabs Across Paragraphs: MS Word

When you select anywhere inside a paragraph, Word's ruler bar shows the tab settings for that paragraph. If you select multiple paragraphs, however, the tabs on the ruler bar may be grayed out. This occurs when the paragraphs have different tab ... settings. In almost any case, an option that is grayed-out infers that the "option" (whatever it may be) is unavailable. With a grayed-out tab, however, that is not the case. One way to set consistent tabs for multiple paragraphs is to select [highlight] the paragraphs and then use the Format | Tabs command from the main menu. To do so: Double-click ... (view more)
