Google Predicts Flight Ticket Price Hikes

Google is to start warning users when flight ticket prices are likely to rise. It adds forecasts to a current system that works with actual price changes. The feature is coming to Google Flights, a dedicated search tool which lets users look for ... flight prices. While several travel sites offer similar tools, Google argues that its is easier to use. It's no secret that ticket prices change over time. While there's an element of last-minute drops as airlines try to avoid empty seats, there's also a broader trend of prices increasing as the weeks count down to a flight, the theory ... (view more)

Final Page Closes on eBook Pricing Scandal

Apple has lost a federal appeal against a ruling that it conspired to keep e-book prices artificially high. The verdict means it will have to pay $450 million in penalties and compensation. It marks the ending of a case dating back to 2012 based ... around two different models of pricing for electronic books. Amazon, which dominated the market before Apple started selling ebooks, uses the same model as with print books: the publisher sets a wholesale price and then the retailer decides how much to charge customers. Apple instead pushed for the "agency model" in which the publisher ... (view more)

LCD HDTV Makers Face $388M Fine for Price Fixing

Some major television manufacturers have been forced to pay a fine of $388 million for their actions in driving up the price of LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions. There's a good chance a TV in your home right now (or at one time) can be ... counted among the devices sold at inflated prices. According to Bloomberg, Sharp and Samsung paid $105 million and $82.7 million, respectively, for allegedly fixing the prices of LCD TVs sold over a seven-year period from 1999 and 2006. HDTV Prices Expected to Decline Amidst Sales Slowdown

Since high definition televisions (HDTVs) first made a splash in the electronics market five years ago, at no point have sales of these devices actually declined -- that is, until now. According to a recent report from the Consumer Electronics ... Association, consumers simply aren't buying high definition televisions right now, meaning it's expected prices could come down significantly in the coming months. The Consumer Electronics Association report points to one glaring statistic: in 2010, 34.4 million TV sets were shipped by manufacturers. That's down 500,000 from 2009, the first time there's ... (view more)

Office 2010 Discount by Amazon, Despite Strong Sales

Amazon has slashed the price of several versions of its Microsoft Office 2010 applications suite. Cuts have been as high as 13 per cent at the online retailer, which insists the reductions have nothing to do with weak demand. Leading the cuts is the ... Home and Student version of Office: Microsoft lists the software at $149, but Amazon currently posts it at just $129. Receiving slightly less drastic cuts is the Home and Business edition, available for $259 (usually $279) and the Professional version, listed at $459 by Microsoft but sold by Amazon for a whopping $499. Amazon Gives In; Higher e-Book Prices Expected

Amazon appears to have blinked first in its stand-off with publishing giant Macmillan over the pricing of Kindle books. The online retailer had even briefly stopped selling printed Macmillan books over the dispute. The disagreement centered on ... Amazon's policy of charging a flat rate of $9.99 for the electronic edition of virtually all new titles it stocks. Macmillan demanded that it be able to set its own pricing, with most major books priced between $12.99 and $14.99. Royalties Replace Fixed Fees At the moment, Amazon pays publishers a fixed fee for each digital sale worth roughly half the ... (view more)

Mac and iPod Prices Reaching Even Higher?
