Sony has officially apologized for using a sacred and historically beloved Anglican cathedral in its violent shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man. In the eighth level of the game, developed for the PlayStation 3, there is a bloody shootout in Manchester Cathedral. "The sequence in question has the player defending the church...against an all out alien assault." (Source: blogcritics.org)
Once the Church of England discovered its presence in the video game, it began a public war against Sony. As a result, Sony appears to be sorry for the uproar. "It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game," says Sony. "We would like to apologize unreservedly to them for causing that offense, and to all parts of the community who we might also have offended." (Source: news.com) Apology accepted? Not exactly. A simple "I'm sorry" is not enough for Manchester Cathedral. The church also wants significant compensation for shock and distress associated with the events surrounding the story, and would like Sony to remove the game from store shelves. Church leaders are also sceptical about whether Sony's apology was sincere. Until they observe otherwise, these leaders will continue to fear that "another religious building could be cloned for virtual desecration." (Source: news.com") While Sony is repentant, the company is standing its ground; promising not to make this mistake again is as far as Sony will go. Therefore, no monetary reparations have been paid to the church, with the game itself "resisting" any outside urge to rip it from store shelves.
