GuruNet: The Answer Engine

Imagine this: you're sitting in front of your computer, writing an email -- and all the sudden, you forget how to spell a word -- or worse yet, you need to find another way to express yourself in a thought-provoking or entertaining manner.

It happens to me all the time.

Like most folks, I use Outlook Express to read and compile my emails because it's free and comes bundled with Windows. Unfortunately, the MS Spell Checker isn't part of Windows or Outlook Express by default (you'll need to install MS Office or similar) -- and to top it all off, Outlook Express doesn't offer a thesaurus.

What to do?

If you're like me, you'll probably flip through umpteen applications to get the job done. Fortunately, I have MS Office installed and therefore have a Spell Checker that works with Outlook Express. In order to use a thesaurus, however, I need to launch MS Word or FrontPage to do a lookup on a word, copy the word I want to use, move back to Outlook Express, and paste my new word. And for any email questions I receive from Readers that require research, I typically open up a new Browser Windows and use Google.com.

This method of 'information digging' is adequate, but I often lose my train of thought during the time it takes to shuffle between applications, cutting and pasting tidbits of information. Thankfully, I recently stumbled across an application that can help me manage my information in a much simpler manner.

What is GuruNet?

GuruNet is an all-in-one multipurpose know-it-all information tool, or quite simply, GuruNet is an 'answer engine'. GuruNet works seamlessly with any application (browser, email, word processor, etc): simply hover your mouse over top of a word, press the ALT key + left click the mouse, and and GuruNet pops up with an unobtrusive Window with information about the chosen word.

GuruNet provides answers to information fast, and is perfect for students and for anyone who loves to learn. With over 770,000 available pre-screened references, GuruNet can search for the meaning of a word (noun or verb), pronounce words, and even recognizes capitalization. What GuruNet is not

GuruNet is not a search engine. Using a search engine often requires quite a bit of information digging, weeding out inadequate or incorrect information, and cross referencing pages just to find the appropriate information. GuruNet is not Spyware / Adware, or obtrusive. GuruNet does not come bundled with third party advertising software. In fact, GuruNet works only when you tell it to -- and best of all, GuruNet uses very little CPU and memory to operate.

GuruNet is compatible with Windows 98, NT, 2000, ME, and XP. An Internet connection is required to use GuruNet, and about 6 megabytes of hard drive space.

Conclusion

For me, an information tool like GuruNet is a virtual Godsend. If you spend a lot of time on the computer (or have a family member that does) -- or if you're just plain curious, GuruNet is something you should definitely try.
