Acer Router Zero-Day Put Home Networks at Risk

Acer is working on firmware updates for two critical zero-day vulnerabilities affecting its Wave 7 mesh routers. The flaws can expose router login credentials and may allow attackers to modify backups in a way that could give them persistent access to the device. If an attacker can take control of the device, they may be able to watch traffic, redirect users to malicious websites, interfere with connected devices, or use the router as a stepping stone into the rest of the network. Acer says the vulnerabilities affect Wave 7 routers running firmware version T7c_GBL_1.01.000055 or earlier. The ...view more

Ask Jeeves Shuts Down After Nearly 30 Years

Ask.com, formerly Ask Jeeves, has closed after almost 30 years. The search tool was one of the first to use natural language queries, something that's arguably come back into fashion today. When Ask Jeeves launched in 1997, the best technological approach to helping people find content on the World Wide Web was still an experimental field. Some approaches involved literally trying to build a directory of websites like a White or Yellow Pages: these quickly became unworkable as the number of sites exploded. Another common approach was to base search around specific terms: the theory was that a ...view more

Facebook Patents AI that Posts After You Die

Facebook's owners have patented an AI tool that could continue posting on behalf of a user who has died. There's no sign it plans on using the technology but it has still raised some significant ethical questions. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, applied for the patent in 2023. It was finally granted in December and then spotted by Business Insider. (Source: businessinsider.com ) The patent covers a technology that would allow the company to simulate a user's activity when they are unable to post for an extended period. Spanish Sexting Scam Turns into WhatsApp Blackmail

Infopackets Reader Alejandro M. writes: " Dear Dennis, I stumbled across your website and read your articles on what to do if someone threatens to expose you and how to deal with online blackmail . I have a similar situation. A week ago I joined a Spanish sexting group that was recommended in a forum online. It looked active and legit, so I figured I'd give it a go. Not long after, I matched up with an attractive woman that supposedly lives near me. She seemed completely normal - polite, and even a little reserved. The texts were sporadic but eventually picked up steam, at which point she ...view more

Sextorted After Trip to Thailand? What to Do

Infopackets Reader Tyler M. writes: " Dear Dennis, I just came across your article on how can I stop sextortion - thanks for that. I have a somewhat different issue, though similar. While on vacation in Thailand, I met a beautiful local woman at a bar in Bangkok. She offered to be my personal guide (plus benefits!) and promised to show me around for the duration of my visit. I was skeptical at first, but knew that this type of ' transactional relationship ' was common in Thailand. After a few drinks I gave in - we exchanged numbers and added each other on Instagram. Everything seemed fine; ...view more
