Spam King Finally Pays Price

A man once dubbed the "Spam King" has been jailed for two and a half years. However, Sanford Wallace's sentence is for emails which were fraudulent rather than simply unwanted. Wallace first came to infamy by sending unwanted faxes before it became ... illegal. In the late 1990s he became one of the first mass spammers and was sued by several Internet providers, including AOL. He was so open about sending spam, that at one point he even got the attention of lawyers at Hormel Foods (the company which makes Spam - a meat product), in which they claimed Wallace was breaching trademark ... (view more)

MySpace Sells for $35M: Report

According to reports, MySpace has been sold by News Corp to advertising network Specific Media for an estimated $35 million. The total sum is apparently a mix of stock and cash, with News Corp holding on to about 5 per cent of MySpace. Unfortunately ... for MySpace staff, the move won't be a happy one. The deal between News Corp and Specific Media is reportedly contingent on MySpace cutting half of its 400 staff members, meaning that layoffs should come down hard by the end of this week. It's likely MySpace management, like CEO Mike Jones, will stay on for an interim period to help with the ... (view more)

MySpace Accused of 2-for-1 Data Breach, WSJ Reports

Like Facebook before it, MySpace has been accused of privacy violations by sharing user details with third-party advertisers. The new story, published in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), came after claims the newspaper had kept the article under wraps ... for business reasons. The claims about MySpace are similar to those involving Facebook. A court has ordered him to pay $6 million in damages and legal fees to MySpace. Scott Richter has already announced he ... won't appeal the award, which is just 5% of the $120 million that MySpace requested. Last month a court awarded the company a record $230 million against two men who'd sent almost 750,000 messages to MySpace members. Texas Refuses Facebook Friend Request

Facebook has made a deal with state attorney governors to better protect child members from online predators. The site is developing a system to ensure new members are telling the truth about their age, and they'll also add in an automatic warning ... to under-18s whenever they are about to give personal information to an adult. In addition, they'll crack down on members who change the date of birth listed on their profile.
