Apple Revamps Product 'Care' Plan
Apple has unveiled a monthly subscription service to cover multiple devices against loss or damage. It's a change from a previous policy of requiring a separate cover plan for each device.
The existing plan, AppleCare+, has a varied fee depending on the item such as $2.99 for an Apple Watch or $9.99 for an iPhone. It covers accidental damage, battery failures and tech support. However, only the iPhone is covered for loss or theft.
The new plan, AppleCare One, covers any three Apple products for $19.99 a month, with additional devices costing $5.99 a month. That means it's only really a saving for somebody with three devices, though it's only a cent more if you have two iPhones or an iPhone and an Apple TV.
The potential savings will depend on the specific combination of devices. For example, somebody with a Mac computer, an iPad and an Apple Watch would still be better off with individual AppleCare+ plans.
Older Devices Eligible
Unlike with AppleCare+, the plan isn't restricted to newly-purchased devices (with a 60-day limit to sign up after purchase). AppleCare One can cover devices up to four years old as long as they are "in good condition". That may require a check in a physical Apple Store, though iPhones and iPads can be checked with a remote diagnostic tool. Changing Devices Is OK
Apple says that when customers trade in a product covered by the plan, they will automatically remove the old product and add the new one. Customers can also add or remove products at any time, with the monthly fee automatically adjusting depending on whether they have more than three covered products. (Source: apple.com)
The deal is aimed at individuals rather than an entire household. That's policed by requiring all the devices to be registered to the same Apple customer account.

Extended warranties
Personally I would never pay $20 a month for an extended warranty. At that price you can buy a new phone in 4 years with the money saved. I bought my Samsung S10+ in 2019 and it's still working with the original battery which lasts me about 2 days of light usage. I never charge it past 85 percent to keep the battery in good shape. In my opinion, it's far better to put your money toward a good, durable phone case (~$50) than to pay $20 a month for an extended warranty. That's insane.
