Apple is reportedly working to significantly expand the satellite connection features available on iPhones, moving beyond just calling emergency services. Future updates could allow for more robust communication and connectivity in areas without cellular or WiFi coverage.

The planned enhancements are said to include the ability to send photos via satellite through the Messages app, an upgrade from the current text-only functionality. Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing satellite connectivity for Apple Maps, which would provide navigation capabilities even when users are offline.

Improved Usability and Connectivity

One of the core improvements being developed is a feature reportedly called "natural usage." This would allow iPhones to connect to satellites without being directly pointed at the sky, enabling connectivity even from inside a car or a user's pocket.

Furthermore, Apple is said to be working on enabling 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) support. This technology would allow cellular towers to utilize satellites to extend their coverage, potentially reducing dead zones in areas with weak signals. (Source: engadget.com)

Future Developments

Reports also suggest that Apple is creating an API (Application Programming Interface) for developers. This would open the door for third-party applications to incorporate satellite-based features for the first time.

The possibility of Apple providing its own satellite service has been discussed internally, though concerns about acting as a carrier have reportedly tempered this possibility. For now, the company relies on its partner, Globalstar, for the satellite network infrastructure.. (Source: macrumors.com)
