3D Xbox Update Due Any Time: Report
3D Xbox Update Due Any Time: Report
The latest buzz in the video gaming world is that Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console is about to receive a 3D makeover via firmware update.
It's believed that the platform revamping could take place as early as next week.
The rush to expand the Xbox brand is due to a similar move on the part of Sony. Over the past year, dozens of PlayStation 3 (PS3) titles -- such as Killzone 3 -- have included 3D support, while also allowing users to stream 3D movies on a pay-per-view basis.
Microsoft Alters Initial 3D Outlook
Interestingly enough, the move would counter what Microsoft had said countless times in the past: namely, that emergent 3D technology was "too niche" and that the company had absolutely no interest in encouraging developers to make 3D content available on the Xbox 360. (Source: i4u.com)
Microsoft has changed their position in recent weeks, telling consumers that the Xbox 360 does possess the technical capabilities to host 3D games. The company even told developers that they would be more than welcome to take advantage of this technology.
No Promotion in the Works for 3D Xbox
While many would be inclined to believe that Microsoft is all-too-willing to fuel the newfound hype surrounding their product with a plethora of advertising, the company has assured the public that this would not be the case.
In fact, Microsoft representatives have revealed that there would be no added promotion of any 3D game, nor does the company plan to spend a single dime on advertising the platform's 3D capabilities.
So while some gaming enthusiasts will likely wait in anticipation for the handful of new titles that will be the first to take advantage of the console's capabilities (early reports indicate that the 3D releases would include Gears of War 3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Batman: Arkham City) -- look for the Xbox 360's 3D revolution to be a rather quiet one.
