Microsoft Expands Security Initiative

We've known for a long time that Microsoft is the most powerful software company in the world. If it's a desktop or laptop PC, in all likelihood it's running a Windows operating system -- or any number of other programs crafted by the Redmond-based company.
Over the course of a year, Microsoft has also began to dabble in security, most notably with the release of its Windows Live OneCare. Although the program has been criticized at times for loopholes, it appears MS is serious about building out this new venture. That's becoming more and more apparent, especially with the recent establishment of related research centers on opposite sides of the earth, including Ireland and Japan.
In addition to the global software expansion, Microsoft also announced that it would be launching an online Malware Protection Center in order to better buffer the zone between Windows users and the spyware goons crawling along the web. (Source: builderau.au)
In expanding their interests and operations, Microsoft appears to have some of the biggest and most historically successful security companies in their sights, including Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro. With insiders still shaking their head at OneCare, it will take Microsoft some time to equal the efforts of the competition.
Like its ventures into the video game console and digital audio markets, Microsoft's expansion here will take time to flourish. One technician from AV Comparatives, an antivirus testing firm, said "It will take years, perhaps five, for Microsoft to be up to par." (Source: news.com)
Regardless of the long journey ahead, those faced with Microsoft security issues now have access to 24-hour international support.
