How to Watch Video Files using a DVD Player

Have you ever wanted to take a video file from your computer and watch it using a DVD player? If so, chances are you associate such activities with utter FRUSTRATION. How to Watch a Video File using a DVD Player Many users think that if you copy a ... video file to a DVD disc, a DVD player will show the video -- but that's not the case. The reason is that most DVD players can only recognize 1 video format ("the DVD format"), whereas computers can understand MANY different video file formats. Thus, attempting to play any video file format inside a DVD player other than "the DVD ... (view more)

Microsoft Resorts To Propaganda To Sell Vista

Since retiring Windows XP on June 30 of this year, Microsoft has been making a push to repair the reputation of Windows Vista while attempting to gain more support from small businesses. Eighteen months after Vista shipped, Microsoft finally ... confessed to what everyone already knew: Vista has problems. More accurately, as noted by Information Week, Microsoft is admitting that Vista had problems shortly after its release, but claims they've been fixed, so it's safe to switch to Vista now. It's not quite that simple though. A couple days ago Microsoft announced the launch of the Windows Vista ... (view more)

Microsoft Testing XP on $100 Laptops

Microsoft has announced they will soon be testing Windows XP on the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) "$100 laptop". It's all part of a project to produce computers so cheaply that it can be donated to children in the developing world. Despite the ... nickname, the machine currently costs $188 to produce. Known as the XO, it's designed to be sturdy enough to work under a variety of conditions such as in extremely warm or cold countries. (Source: laptopgiving.org ) James Utzschneider of Microsoft says he'll be meeting the team behind the XO this week. He says reports that Windows already works ... (view more)

Technology Makes It Easier For People To Tell Lies

"Look me in the eye." That old cliche is often said to get someone to tell the truth. But technology tends to eliminate that face-to-face (and eye-to-eye) contact. Therefore, it is logical to conclude that the use of technology -- such as text ... messaging or email -- makes it easier for people to lie. Well, that has now been officially confirmed: by 72 Point, a poll company based in the United Kingdom. (Source: pcmag.com ) 72 Point conducted its study on behalf of Friends Provident PLC, a British financial services group. (Source: cbc.ca ) According to the survey, nearly 75 percent of the poll- ... (view more)

Windows Vista Launches... Incomplete?

Did we miss something? On the same day that Microsoft is hurrying out Vista business to the outstretched arms of highly aroused corporate entities, security experts at Symantec and Trend Micro are telling the media that they're still working on the ... operating system. We're wondering what this means for the initial batch of Vista units, which were shipped out to businesses yesterday. In fact, the only selected security company to complete their work with Vista is the well-known McAfee. However, that leaves Symantec, Trend Micro, and CA with a lot of work to do. Although home buyers can be ... (view more)

Firewalls: Hardware and Software Solutions

[Continued from: Firewalls: Definition | Firewalls: A Brief Discussion ] Because of my need to test everything I share with the infopackets audience, I have spent a great deal of time evaluating various firewall packages. This kind of testing takes ... a lot of time. Installing each firewall and letting it work while I monitor it isn't hard work or anything, but it does take time -- sort of like watching grass grow, if you know what I mean. ;-) The process I followed included installation and configuration as well as some time to allow the firewall to actually do its intended job. That last part ... (view more)

Infopackets Needs Your Help!

Since November 2005, infopackets has opened its doors to volunteer authors to share their thoughts and ideas with our audience. The transition to a multi-authored web site has been both enlightening and challenging. On one side: infopackets now ... offers a variety of fresh and interesting discussions almost daily to its audience; on the other hand, acquiring and maintaining material on a regular basis has proven to be particularly difficult. Let me explain. Since our volunteer bloggers are not paid to submit articles, submissions have been (for the most part) sporadic. Further to that, my work ... (view more)

A Driver for This Device Was not Required and has Been Disabled (Code 32) - CD Rom Drives Wont Work?

Infopackets Reader Ken H. writes: " Dear Dennis, In the device manager, all of my DVD and CD-ROM devices won't work. Device Manager states that 'a driver for this device was not required and has been disabled (Code 32)'. Question: how can I get ... these devices to work again? I have uninstalled them and restarted the computer to let it find new drivers but that didn't work. I have scanned my PC for viruses and am clean. I have also researched this topic in Google and found a post which states that this error message can appear if you have Roxio Easy CD Creator (which I do). The post suggested a ... (view more)
