Library Of Congress Abandons Twitter Archive

The Library of Congress has abandoned a project to archive every post made on Twitter. It blames the sheer number of "tweets" now being made, along with an increasing reliance on images and videos. The library is the world's largest and collects all ... manner of documents from newspapers to government forms. As a general rule it, doesn't aim to collect all possible data from a source but made an exception for Twitter in 2010. At that point it reached an agreement with Twitter to get a copy of its complete archive of posts, then dating back to 2006. The idea was to "document the emergence of ... (view more)

Explained: When to Encrypt your Hard Drive, and When not to

Infopackets Reader Scott writes: " Dear Dennis, I'm thinking of turning on disk encryption for my Windows 10 computer. I've never done this before. Is there anything to be concerned about or to be aware of? " My response: This is a good question. ... The truth of the matter is that if you encrypt your entire C drive using Windows BitLocker or a third party utility, it's going to slow your system down quite a bit. The reason for this is because every single file written to the drive must be encrypted, and then decrypted when read - including your operating system files. Constantly encrypting and ... (view more)

Infopackets Reader Phil S. writes: " Dear Dennis, I often view web pages online the Internet that I want to archive into PDF (portable document format), so that I can view them later. I am using Windows 10, and normally I use Firefox as my browser. ... However, when I save the the web pages for archiving, they always open up in Edge. Library of Congress Compiling Huge Twitter Archive

The U.S. Library of Congress has completed its archive of every Twitter post during the first four years following the site's launch. Unfortunately, making that archive useful has proven extremely difficult. Back in April 2010, the Library of ... Congress signed a deal to archive Twitter posts, known as 'tweets.' The Library's Gayle Osterberg says those tweets are an important and valid research source. "As society turns to social media as a primary method of communication and creative expression, social media is supplementing, and in some cases supplanting, letters, journals, serial publications ... (view more)

Split large files for backup onto CD?

Infopackets Reader Lai C. writes: " Dear Dennis, I have recently organized all of my critical files into 1 single folder. The rationale for organizing in this manner is so that it is easy for me to locate my files for the purpose of backing them up ... onto CD recordable. My Critical File Folder contains over 5 gigabytes (GB) worth of data -- with some files being quite large in size. Ideally, I would like to store all the files 'perfectly' onto 8 CDs in order to save time and media [hint: 8 CDs x 700 megabytes each = 5.6 gigabytes, which is enough to store the backup folder]. The way things ... (view more)

WinBackup doesn't support my CD Writer?

Over the weekend, Lanny B. indirectly asked me a question about how to span an archive using WinBackup : " Hi Dennis! As always, love your newsletter! Keep up the good work. I'm writing today about WinBackup . It seems that the program currently ... does not support my CD-R/W burner (LITE-ON LTR-24102B). Whenever I try to run a backup and record to the burner, all I get is an error message which states that my 'CD-R/W drive is not supported.'
