Windows 10 Update Control Disabled
Windows 10 Update Control Disabled
Microsoft has removed a key feature for some Windows 10 users by disabling their ability to pause system updates. It could mean some computers may even try to update to Windows 11 without the user's intentional consent.
The change primarily affects those not enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program and coincides with the OS's end-of-support date.
A Loss of User Control
Affected users on Windows 10 Home and Pro, version 22H2, now find the "Pause updates" button in their settings greyed out and unusable. This affects machines that have passed their official end-of-service date, stripping away a standard feature for managing system updates. It leaves users with fewer options for controlling when their device installs new software patches.
More cynical analysts have suggested it's a deliberate strategy to push users toward one of two choices. They must either migrate to Windows 11 or sign up to the extended updates program to continue receiving vital security patches. (Source: eteknix.com)
Risk of Unwanted Upgrades
This new policy is compounded by Microsoft's aggressive campaign to promote Windows 11. According to reports, some users are being presented with persistent, full-screen prompts to upgrade. These intrusive screens are reportedly designed in a way that makes it easy to accidentally consent to an upgrade.
Previously, a user who mistakenly initiated the Windows 11 download could use the pause function to halt the entire process. With that safeguard gone, a single accidental click could lock them into an unstoppable and unwanted operating system upgrade. This creates a situation where a simple mistake cannot be easily reversed. (Source: forbes.com)
The design of the upgrade prompts has drawn criticism, with the primary options being to "Get it" or "Schedule it." The option to decline is reportedly much less prominent, increasing the odds of an accidental installation. These tactics are seen as a way to boost Windows 11 adoption figures at the expense of user choice.
What's Your Opinion?
What is your view on Microsoft removing the option to pause updates for Windows 10 users not paying for support? Does this policy make you more likely to upgrade to Windows 11 or switch to another operating system? Have you personally encountered these full-screen upgrade prompts?

Typical of Microsoft
The negative response should always be as prominent as the positive response. Anything else should be illegal.
I’m enrolled in the ESU program and still get the upgrade banner on the update page. If I wanted 11, I wouldn’t have enrolled in the ESU program. Stop bugging me already!
Go ahead... update to 11
I have one computer in my house that isn't 11, because the cpu is too old, i7-4700. To be honest, the other two computers I have are also too old, but I force upgraded anyway. The last one is my media pc which just houses all our movies and tv shows I've pulled from dvd/blu-ray over the years. I didn't feel like trying to update it... if they want to allow it to be updated, then I'm ok with that. lol!
Win 11 Upgrade
I thought win 11 required a special chip on a newer computer to get win 11. If you try and update to win 11 on an older computer, the update would detect that and tell you that win 11 won't run on your older computer. As far as I am concerned Microsoft has gone to hell in a hand basket since Bill Gates retired.
Also what happened to the time when MS said win 10 is the last operating system?
It's just and only about MONEY!
Merry Christmas Dennis and hope all is well with you and yours.
