PC Bug Doctor scam?

Infopackets Reader Linda G. writes: " Dear Dennis, I just read your article on the free Spyware scanning software, ' XoftSPy '. It reminded me of a similar experience I had with a program called PC Bug Doctor. The PC Bug Doctor web site promised to ... scan and repair 'every error on your Computer anytime you need it.' I admit, I was a bit skeptical, but figured it would be worth a shot. Boy was I wrong! Although the program reported over 200 errors on my computer, I had to register it in order to fix them ($40). Mind you, I would have gladly paid the registration fee if I knew what the ... (view more)

Email IP address change?

Infopackets Reader Marilyn W. writes: " Dear Dennis, I am absolutely desperate to find a program that will poll my Linksys router periodically and report any changes in the email address periodically. I have done some research, and while I can find ... lots of programs that will update a DNS server or post the new IP on an FTP or website, I can't seem to find one that will just send me an email. There is one, Keep Me Posted, but I have run into issues with it, and I have had several XP machines that it won't run on. Can you or your Readers assist? " My response: I was unaware of such a ... (view more)

Registry Mechanic 3 Review

Does your computer seem slower than the first day you brought it home and plugged it in? SOS Crash Recovery nightmare

What would you do if your hard drive crashed and the data it contained was not recoverable? Freeware greeting card program?, Part 2

Recall -- Last week, Infopackets Reader Jenny C. asked if I knew of a freeware greeting card program. She wrote: " I am wondering if you could help me: I have been trying to find a small (and hopefully free) software program to create ordinary ... greeting cards -- one that I can put my own pictures or clipart on, write my own verse, and mail it (via snail mail) to friends. I used to use a greeting card program that came pre-packaged with my computer, but the program has expired and I can no longer use it. I would love to make my own greeting cards and I am sure other subscribers would too. ... (view more)

How to remove any Spyware / Adware Toolbar

Infopackets Reader 'SweetImage' writes: " Dennis is there any way to get rid of the Mirar toolbar once and for all? I have searched sites where I have found loads of people having the same problem. I have used at least 8 different Adware-blocking ... programs to remove the toolbar from my system, but none of them can get rid of this rotten thing! Mirar support has not answered my emails and I am going absolutely crazy trying to remove it from my system. I cannot use the Windows System Restore because it won't allow me to roll back (except for today's date) -- and furthermore, Dell can't help ... (view more)

Freeware sound editor?, Part 2

Recall -- After briefly reviewing Sound Pad by Menasoft in last weeks' newsletter, I asked Infopackets Readers to send me their own picks for a favorite freeware sound editor. Quite a number of of users recommended a program called Audacity. ... Infopackets Reader Peter G. writes: " I have used Audacity to record audio tapes onto CD.
